  • Question:
Why has the use of QR Codes in the United States lagged behind Japan?

    Answer by expert
    Joe Barber:
QR Codes were introduced several years ago in Japan, and the Japanese are further along the adoption curve. They are just now being used on a large scale in the United States because mobile carriers here have only recently upgraded their networks to 3G. 3G technology is necessary to provide the bandwidth required for acceptable access speeds on the mobile web. With the introduction of 3G, we have seen mobile web traffic explode, growing over 300 percent. This is why you are now starting to see QR codes popping up all over the United States, and why you can expect the adoption here to follow the quick uptake that has been seen in Japan.

  • Question:
Are QR Codes a replacement for PURLs (Personalized URLs)?

    Answer by expert Joe Barber:
No. In fact, QR Codes serve to enhance campaigns that use PURLs or any other dynamically-generated personalized Web experience. QR Codes reduce the barriers to response by allowing a recipient to simply scan the code and be delivered directly to the personalized web page. The most effective way to communicate with people today is through direct personalized one-to-one communications. QR Codes are a tool that helps to make these communications more effective by making the response process as simple as possible for the recipient.

  • Question: What could be the possible causes that would make a duplex print job start on the reverse side with an IBM Infoprint 2000?

Answer by expert Paul R. Kiel: There are several possibilities for this. First, the job could be starting with two channel one (top of page) requests. When you look at the actual data in the queue, do you see any carriage control other than a single channel one with the first page of data? If you have any records before the first channel one, this would cause the first page in the report to print a blank page. Application data is a good place to start troubleshooting. Another possibility is conditional processing and a blank overlay with constant front in the copy-group. Other possibilities: micro code bug and PSF Bug. Have you opened an incident with the support center?
